How can someone so utterly stupid survive?

By sheet luck.

Born with severely crossed eyes and a tongue that can barely stay inside her mouth, the opossum was abandoned at birth in a pile of trash. She grew up on the fringe, only interacted with when others felt sorry for her (or felt like being cruel), but it was always short lived. She knows how to speak, but she has few skills due to being blind.

She was born in trash, lived in trash, and if things go well for her, she might not die in trash.
